Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the fairest of them all?
The ubiquitous Mirror has been an object of vanity since ages. But did you know that mirrors are extremely multi-functional? Many interior decorators use them to give the illusion of space, as element of wall décor and even to coat the surface of furniture to bring in the bling element. And in recent times, the mirror is being commonly being used as a feature wall to make it the focal point of a living room’s decor.
In the post, let us explore the possible ways to incorporate mirrors into your feature wall.
How Feature Walls make an impact on your interior décor
A feature wall or accent wall is a wall that adds interest to a room through texture, color and contrast. Painting all walls in a neutral color can get monotonous and boring after some time. Adding color or other design elements to just one wall can change the mood and look of the entire room.
But contrary to popular belief, a feature wall can be made in any part of the house. We often have the misconception that a feature wall is only for the living room as a TV feature wall, but that’s not true. Yes, hallway entrances, bedrooms or kitchens can also have feature walls.
Back in the 90’s, feature walls were very trendy, with splashes of bold colors. Although this trend is making a comeback, emphasis is more on design, texture and subtlety. And using mirrors as an entire or part of a feature wall is trending.
Use of Mirrors in a Feature Wall
My home entryway is long, narrow and not very bright. To add some character to it, we decided to place a few mirror tiles along the wall. Not only does it look good, it also gives an illusion of space and is bright from natural light reflecting. And the best part, I can have a quick look-see before heading out!
Creating a mirror feature wall can also be a DIY project. With so many options available online and in-store, this can turn into a fun family project.
With newer technology, the color, shape, size, and finish of a mirror can be customized to blend with the rest of the interior. They are also durable, easy to maintain and last a long time.
5 Mirror Design Concepts to try out
There are many options available when working with mirrors. Here are five design concepts suited for Singaporeans to try out in their homes –
- Mounted Mirror decorative frames
These are just like photo-frames with a mirror instead of a photo. There are so many frame designs to choose from. And if you can’t find something you like, you can also get it customized to suit your needs.
- Tinted or Clear Mirror Wall with etched design
Creating a mirrored wall instantly makes a small room look spacious. Tinted mirrors can complement existing color scheme as silver mirrors may sometimes look too stark. Mirrors with etched designs also add beautiful texture to otherwise plain ones. If doing an entire wall, its best to call professionals.
- Mirrored Tile Centerpiece
Mirrored tiles come in different sizes. Just like normal tiles, bigger mirrored tiles need a strong adhesive or cement to adhere with. Smaller tiles can be stuck using double sided mounting tape or other types of adhesives. Having the flexibility to come up with your own tile design makes for an interesting DIY project. However, if you intend to use big mirrored tiles in your dining area, for example, or mounting it on the ceiling you will need external help.
Entryway Mirror Display
Just like how I had used mirror tiles for my entryway, you can also use them as a centerpiece. Long thin panels placed vertically or horizontally gives an elegant effect. For a small entryway, a collage of different framed mirrors looks fun and quirky. Whether you have a long or short entryway, a mirror is always a welcome sight for both home dwellers and guests.
- Hexagon Mirror Cluster
These are similar to tiled mirrors, but in the shape of a hexagon. When placed together in a cluster, they give a honeycomb effect. Experiment with different design and color options to make it really unique. Hexagon mirror tiles are easily available both online and in furniture stores.
Be it bold and dramatic or simple and contemporary, the right type of mirror decoration can tie the look of the room adding light and roominess to your space. We hope this blog has inspired you to use mirrors as a décor element in your home!
