Roofing Installation for Rainwater Protection at Nassim Road
Project Background
House of Glass was engaged to resolve a rainwater intrusion issue affecting a residential unit at Nassim Park Residences, Singapore. The property featured an airwell located below roof floor level, which allowed rainwater to accumulate and enter the interior space during heavy rainfall.
The client required a permanent roofing solution to prevent rainwater penetration while maintaining natural light transmission and architectural aesthetics. As the installation involved rooftop structural modifications and skylight coverage, the project also required regulatory approval and structural compliance.
This project demonstrates House of Glass’ expertise in designing and installing custom glass and polycarbonate roofing systems to solve water intrusion issues while enhancing property usability and protection.
Solution: Polycarbonate Skylight Roofing with Steel Support Structure
House of Glass designed and installed a custom polycarbonate roofing system supported by a galvanised mild steel structural framework.
Clear solid polycarbonate panels were selected due to their excellent durability, weather resistance, and light transmission properties. Polycarbonate offers superior impact resistance compared to standard glass and is ideal for skylight and roofing applications exposed to environmental stress.
The roofing structure was supported using cold galvanised mild steel L-angle and hollow sections measuring 50 mm x 100 mm x 4.5 mm thickness. The metal framework was finished with protective paint to ensure corrosion resistance and long-term durability.
Clamping bars, EVA foam, and silicone sealants were used to secure the polycarbonate panels and provide full weatherproof sealing, preventing rainwater penetration.
Scope of Work
- House of Glass provided a complete roofing solution including design, regulatory submission, structural preparation, and installation.
- The project involved submission of detailed shop drawings and structural plans for URA approval, along with Professional Engineer (PE) endorsement to ensure full compliance with Singapore’s building regulations.
- Our team fabricated and installed a custom steel support structure and clear 9.5 mm polycarbonate roofing panels measuring approximately 8400 mm by 4100 mm. Labour, tools, and materials were safely transported to the rooftop installation area at Level 5.
- The installation process was completed efficiently over multiple site visits, ensuring structural stability, weather resistance, and proper sealing of the new roofing system.
Challenges Faced
- One of the primary challenges was obtaining regulatory approval for the skylight roofing installation. Skylight structures exceeding certain dimensions require URA submission and approval to ensure compliance with building regulations.
- While a smaller roofing structure could have avoided approval requirements, it would not have provided adequate rain protection. To ensure full coverage and long-term effectiveness, House of Glass prepared and submitted detailed technical drawings and successfully obtained URA approval.
- The rooftop installation also required careful handling and transportation of structural materials and roofing panels to elevated levels.
- Through proper planning, regulatory coordination, and professional installation practices, the project was completed successfully.
