Pavilion Glass Roof Replacement at Craig Road, Singapore
Project Background
House of Glass was engaged to upgrade an existing outdoor pavilion located at Craig Road, Tanjong Pagar, Singapore. The pavilion originally featured a traditional ceramic tile roof, which limited natural light penetration and no longer matched the modern architectural character of the surrounding residential and commercial buildings.
The client’s objective was to replace the outdated roofing system with a contemporary glass roof solution that would improve aesthetics, allow natural daylight into the space, and provide long-term durability with minimal maintenance. As the pavilion is located in a shared outdoor environment, the new structure also needed to meet strict safety requirements and withstand Singapore’s tropical weather conditions, including heavy rain, UV exposure, and humidity.
This project required a customised architectural glass roof system capable of delivering both structural performance and visual enhancement while integrating seamlessly with the existing pavilion framework.
Solution: Custom Tempered Laminated Glass Roof System
House of Glass designed and installed a custom-engineered tempered laminated glass roof supported by a precision-fabricated aluminium cone profile structure.
The roofing system consisted of both tinted tempered laminated glass and clear tempered laminated glass panels. Each laminated glass unit comprised two layers of tempered safety glass bonded with a PVB interlayer. This configuration ensures that the glass remains intact even in rare breakage situations, making it ideal for overhead and public-use applications.
The glass panels were supported by a red powder-coated aluminium cone profile framework, which was custom fabricated to match the pavilion’s structural geometry. Powder coating provides corrosion resistance and long-term durability in Singapore’s humid climate.
Structural silicone sealants, clamping ridge supports, and integrated drip edge components were used to ensure weatherproofing, structural integrity, and proper rainwater drainage.
This modern architectural glazing solution significantly enhanced both the functionality and appearance of the pavilion.
Scope of Work
- House of Glass provided a complete turnkey glazing solution, covering all stages from preparation to final installation.
- The project scope included removal of the existing ceramic tile roof, design and fabrication of the custom aluminium support structure, and supply and installation of tempered laminated glass panels. A total of 52 tinted laminated tempered glass panels and 52 clear laminated tempered glass panels were installed to form the pavilion’s conical roof structure.
- Our team installed the aluminium cone profile framework, followed by precise placement and alignment of each glass panel. Structural silicone bonding and clamping ridge supports were applied to ensure long-term structural stability and weather resistance.
- Specialised lifting equipment, including boom lifts, was used to safely install the glass panels at height while maintaining installation accuracy.
- The project was completed efficiently within 5 days and 4 hours, minimising disruption to the surrounding environment.
Challenges Faced
- One of the primary challenges of this project was the pavilion’s complex cone-shaped roof geometry. Unlike standard flat or rectangular glazing installations, the pavilion required custom-fabricated triangular glass panels arranged in a converging cone structure.
- Each triangular section had to be split into multiple pieces, resulting in irregular multi-sided glass panels that required extremely precise fabrication and installation.
- Due to the structural complexity, conventional measurement methods were insufficient to guarantee accurate fitment. Even minor deviations could compromise structural alignment, weatherproofing, and overall safety.
- To overcome this challenge, House of Glass used specialised templating techniques to create precise measurements for each glass panel. Multiple templates were created and verified before fabrication to ensure perfect fitment.
- Our experienced glazing technicians carefully aligned and installed each panel to achieve a seamless and structurally sound glass roof system.
Benefits of the New Glass Roof Pavilion
Improved Natural Light
The glass roof allows natural daylight to enter the pavilion, creating a brighter, more welcoming space while maintaining protection from rain and outdoor elements.
Modern Architectural Appearance
Replacing the traditional ceramic tile roof with a sleek glass structure transformed the pavilion into a contemporary architectural feature that enhances the surrounding environment.
Enhanced Safety and Structural Integrity
Tempered laminated safety glass provides superior strength and impact resistance. Even in rare breakage scenarios, the laminated interlayer holds the glass in place, reducing safety risks.
Durability in Singapore’s Climate
The powder-coated aluminium support structure and laminated glass system provide excellent resistance to corrosion, UV exposure, and heavy rainfall.
Reduced Maintenance Requirements
Compared to ceramic tile roofs, glass roofing systems require less maintenance and offer long-term performance with fewer structural issues.
Improved Property Value and Usability
The upgraded pavilion provides a more functional and visually appealing outdoor space for residents and visitors.
